The ‘Mixx-it’ remix of “Push It” by DJ Cameron Paul featured on the flipside of the “Tramp” 7″ single became an unexpected nationwide hit, sending its A-side up the R&B Chart to #21 in the fall of ‘87.
“Push It (Remix)” soon got its own release and reached #19 on the Hot 100 in early 1988. That success spread overseas with the song reaching the top 10 in ten countries.
“Tramp”/“Push It” initially climbed to #41 in the UK in early ‘88. However, it re-entered the chart after the group performed it at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute concert held at Wembley that June, rocketing the single up to the #2 spot in July.
During this success of Cameron Paul’s remix of “Push It”, Hot, Cool & Vicious was re-released with Paul’s mix as its first track.
Soon, when “Push It” was certified Gold, then Platinum by the RIAA, it made Salt N Pepa the first female rap group to do both. The track was also nominated for the Grammys first-ever Best Rap Performance award in 1989, losing to DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince’s “Parents Just Don’t Understand”.
“Push It” continues to receive accolades decades after its release. In 2008, VH1 ranked “Push It” at #9 on their 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. In 2011, “Push It” was ranked #446 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
