Big Maybelle – Oh Lord What are You Doing to Me?

Big Maybelle – Oh Lord What are You Doing to Me?

Maybelle had been a R&B star since the 40s. By the time she did this ballad in 1964 her voice was a bit battered. It has the right feel for this song though.
Scepter records of NYC recorded a few singers on this track.

  1. She sang from her gut. Ravaged by heroin and other health issues, at the end that's about all she still had left. And the world should be forever grateful. BTW Dr John sent me. He LOVED her and talked about her at every concert I saw of him..

  2. I am so glad that there are others who appreciated the "Music of My Life", as Richard Pegue used to be fond of saying on his weekly radio program (WVON in Chicago "dusties" ) . I miss him and his wit and selections.

  3. oh, Lawd this tune is so beautiful, beautiful strong unrestrained vocals with a soft but emotional backing accompaniment
epitome of black soulful soul and emotion.keep uncovering more documented recordings of our prestigious quality works of art like this .the world needs to hear.and every time i listen to this particular track i come very close to (yes) tears.

  4. My husband's friend and favorite female singer on the ballads.  They would switch off songs with each other every night while on tour.  Jimmy loved Big Maybelle, Little Miss Cornshucks, & Dinah Washing for female vocal stylists.
