Don’t Be Blue. Seedsman’s Got You on Blue Monday.
Blue Monday was created by a marketing company to get people to book flights in January. It still works. I’m off to Ibiza next week. And, right now on Seedsman, it’s buy 2 strains and get 30% off your order!
Why? Because January does suck. And Blue Monday may just be the saddest day of the year. But it’s also the perfect month to stock up on seeds for the year ahead.
And, while, yes, this is us just being another brand to hop on a corporately created holiday to sell you products, unlike those other brands, we’re selling something that may just positively impact your mental health.
Yes, really. If you buy cannabis seeds, nurture and then germinate them, then plant and watch them grow into big, beautiful bountiful trees – it’s a gratifying experience. That’s before we even get into the link between cannabinoids and mental health. In fact, let’s get into that now.
The Link Between Cannabis and Mental Health
Cannabis is not one substance. It’s 100 different cannabinoids that interact with our brains and bodies in our inbuilt endocannabinoid systems. And each seed contains a different strain with its own cannabinoid levels. And, this variation is why cannabis can affect many psychological and physiological processes.
It’s this incredible variety that makes it difficult to say with complete confidence that, yes, cannabis is good for your mental health, or no, cannabis is bad for it.
We can say for sure that there have been studies on how CBD can reduce anxiety, THC can have anti-depressant like effects, and treat OCD symptoms.
However, so many variables will impact a person’s anxiety levels or general mood when consuming cannabis. How potent is it? How often do you smoke? Are you on other medications? Is this a strain you’re familiar with?
When it comes to cannabis and mental health, there are no definitives.
Not One Size Fits All
Cannabis, like most medications, can’t really be called strictly good or bad for mental health. Instead, it needs a more nuanced discussion about the potential harms or benefits backed by science and done without bias or prejudice.
Which, in the weed game, can be hard to find.
This paper in the International Review of Psychiatry shows the relationship between cannabis and mental health is quite complicated.
However, there’s no debate on the link between the endocannabinoid system and mood regulation. If you take this at face value, it means stimulation of the endocannabinoid system with cannabis will regulate your mood. The science is a little patchy here.
For a regular user, cannabis is generally safe. But those with underlying mental health or addiction concerns means cannabis can be detrimental to your mental.
Mixed messaging about cannabis isn’t that surprising given the sheer complexity of the plant and the difficulty in conducting research given the murky legal standings. The arguments for or against are often politically or emotionally motivated.
There is encouraging, albeit incomplete, evidence for cannabis in treating a range of psychiatric disorders. Supportive findings are continually emerging. However, as a cannabis user, you need to be mindful of a range of prescriptive and occupational safety considerations, especially if consuming higher level THC strains.
Most people will know whether cannabis is what their depression, anxiety, OCD or PTSD needs. If you’re one of them, let us know in the comments.
The Blue Monday Sale
