  1. This is why I never talked to my dad after 16 years I remember him telling me how much he wished he would’ve just killed me instead of dealing with a god forsaken curse I was to him when I all wanted was for him to love me but only saw that being given to my half siblings

  2. I almost died a few years ago, and lost a leg during the incident. Its a long story, but the point is my dad was with me every single day i needed him, as was my mother and sister. They stood beside me no matter what. Family is everything.

  3. I'm not here to be inspired to tell any father-son tales that most of you are making up…but I'm from Pittsburgh where this movie was filmed and I remember when the talk of the town was that Denzel was in town for the production.

Anyway, I just watched this film, on Netflix for the very first time this evening, Sunday September 3, 2023, some six years or so after it was made.

I enjoyed it…great film and that little girl that played Raynell was adorable and my favorite character in the film was the older guy that worked with Denzel, he was very authentic.

The ending was a tear jerker and the brother that played Gabe, Mykelri Williamson is a very underrated actor.

  4. Troy is a good parent because in the end, he taught Cory to not idolize him and follow in his footsteps. While he is now in the army, he handled himself well. Cory thought that Troy hated him, but Troy actually loved him, despite how imperfect he is. And basically Troy’s anger in this scene is actually a reflection of every loving parent. They expect love from their children, whether it’s cuddling or strictness, and just hearing the word “like” is not enough. A parent doesn’t have to like their child, but what matters is that they still have to love them. There is no “liking somebody” in family. Only love.

  5. How great is this scene?! Dad is an a-hole as the story will tell, treats his son like crap. But he is not wrong either. Dw nails this. I love him slapping the son to stay stand up straight and getting that whole idea of putting a "sir" on the end of things.

  6. Jjeeeesssuuuuussss how accurate this is to my childhood!!! Day I was leaving to boot camp I was shook had to go the restroom to get myself together. Pops knocked and said "let me in". I did my best to not show emotion. Soon as he say my eyes water he said" noooppppeeeee….get rid of those tears!!! Don't let this man see you weak!! Show no fear!!! Go out there chum up chest out!!! Time to become a man". They don't make em like him no more!!! Luis Sanchez Jr!!!! Polar bear

  7. So many film critics in the comments but no context in the comments. Context to realize time and era and culture enough to understand the depth of love and Denzel’s heart aching while he’s yelling at his son coz he loves him so much but doesn’t know how to express it any other way coz he wasn’t taught that by his father either. He don’t want his son to grow up wanting everyone else to “like him” coz that’s not how the world works. Old school parenting. Not the best I know but y’all blind for not seeing the pain in Denzel’s eyes. If that was my father I would’ve smiled and said “thanks dad I love u too” at the end.

  8. You can fulfill a responsibility to your son but that doesn't mean you shouldn't show love to them either. The neglect he receives is far more impactful than any harsh lesson

  9. a lot of people see this scene out of context with the rest of the story and assume Tory is a good dad, but he really isn't. He provides for his family sure, but that's about it. He is a heavily damaged and selfish person who cares very little about his son's emotions or dreams. He also cheats on his wife, who in all respects seems to be a great person, because he feels stuck in life. By the end of the play he has completely alienated everyone who loved him because of how selfish and jaded he becomes.

  10. all of these comments saying how much it felt when their dad said I love you… I thought how pathetic you all were until my son was born… I didn't have that connection with my dad and I'll be a fool to repeat that with my own son.

  11. I'm a woman and that was hard to hear. Kids want love from their parents no matter HOW OLD they get. I have a 21 year old son and till this day, he still wants an approval and I love you from me… Even when he doesn't say it out loud.

  12. You all are missing the fact that he said LIKE not LOVE. These kids/teenagers think if you don't let them do what they want to do, how they want to do it. You don't like them. We aren't friends . And he said don't worry about if people like you make sure people do right by you. Which is the take away from thus scene.. He wasn't raising a people pleaser.
