Grandmaster Caz: Early DJs Were Way More Invested Than Today

http://www.vladtv.com – Legendary emcee Grandmaster Caz detailed the early DJ culture and reveals the differences in today’s DJs. The Bronx native says that back in the day the sound system was the first signifier of how great a DJ truly was, and Caz says the systems were extremely pricey.

Instead of getting everything on a flash drive, Caz explains that records were additional form of rating a DJ, because the albums were more exclusive than today. He adds that some DJs would even wash out the labels or put tape over them to keep up with the exclusivity of their records.

Check out more of what Grandmaster Caz had to say about the DJ culture in the above clip.

  1. Caz is speaking blasphemy saying Jamaican DJ culture started hip hop. It's a shame he's from the Bronx and doesn't know the real. Stop perpetuating that nonsense because people will believe those inaccuracies.
Young kids from the Bronx created hip hop and then culture of it way before Herc was even here learning the culture of America and NYC. He even says that himself if you watch his interviews. He didn't invent shit but the "merry go round' technique. DJs were already using 2 turntables and James Brown records were already the backdrop of Hip Hop. Kool DJ D was already rocking a better sound system than Herc had before Herc had the Herculoid sound system. Please learn ya authentic Hip Hop History and stop listening to uninformed garbage like this. People always try to take away things from black Americans. HIP HOP is from here and no where else ! Caribbean culture had absolutely nothing to do with hip hop and the DJ culture here

  2. So the Jamaican DJ culture is a huge direct sample of what later became Hip Hop. Ladies and gentlemen I'm about to travel to Jamaica and study their game and bring this back into Hip Hop.

People could talk about trap this or gangster that all they want but let's see these trappers become gifted DJs and then they'll be respect to there game

  3. Dj's of the 70's were the best before scratching. it was simply all about the music and feeling good just dancing..nobody shooting up the place..just people who had 1 thing in common.. The love of music…

  4. Flash maybe put THE CUTTING BETWEEN 2 DECKS situation, but certainly he dont invented the crossfader because DJ Plummer on Brooklyn and DJ Kool Dee (Bronx) they had the GLI 3800 Mixer w Crossfader BEFORE FLASH.

  5. Buying doubles of everything and carrying those crates was an investment back in the day. Setting up your system before and after the jam was something a lot of people didn't realize. You knew who were your true friends at the end of the party.

  6. interview CAZ more you can learn alot…..all HIP HOP heads should already know this but it goes to show how much little many know because people dont build with the elders and pioneers and try to sweep OUR stories under the rug….. VLAD TV I would also love to see you interview people in HIP HOP who dont just DJ or EMCEE or PRODUCE …perhaps you can build with BBOYS / BGIRLS / POPPERS/LOCKERS/ROCKERS/ WRITERS / BEATBOXERS etc….. they are very much a part of the culture also who can provide in deph and very introspective insight on the commentary tip for all of your videos… keep doing your thing..PEACE….
