How Marvin Gaye’s Murder Affected Smokey Robinson | Oprah’s Master Class | Oprah Winfrey Network

On April 1, 1984, Motown superstar Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father. More than 30 years later, Smokey Robinson, Marvin’s longtime friend and musical collaborator, still remembers where he was when he heard the news. “I’m in my car, and I’m listening to the radio,” he says. “And the disc jokey interrupts the programming to say, ‘Soul singer Marvin Gaye was pronounced dead on arrival at so and so hospital.'”
Considering the date, Smokey says his first thought was that this was a cruel April Fool’s Day joke. Then, he pulled over at a gas station and called Marvin’s ex-wife, Anna. “As soon as she heard my voice, she said, ‘Yes, baby, its true,'” he says. “That was…just unacceptable to my psyche”. In the above video, Smokey shares how he learned to accept the fact that Marvin was gone. For more on #masterclass, visit http://bit.ly/1ZQfeZO

  1. I remember Smokey relating the story of when Marvin called him early morning takin about goin runnin in Detriot 20 degree cold so he can get in shape to 'try out with the NFL Detroit Lions'…Lol!!!

  2. Gm edagdwg thanks for sharing always love my boy friend Mr. Marvin Gaye ☮️❤️💯 never another love him as a sister saw his last show at reado city in Great old New York City born and raised Linda j peace ❤️💯🌈

  3. Marvin Gaye's death affected everyone cuz he was so greatly loved he was such a kind soul and a voice no one will ever have or ever will have in the future.

  4. "Where ever you go
…there you are" ..Smokey I thought u & Marvin were friends?🤔that's a strange thing to say after hearing about your friend getting shot!

  5. He got his Green Eyes from his Maternal Grandmother who was a White Caucasian Lady from New Orleans, LA. You know what's so eerie. The Cast of Guiding Light found out in 2009 that their show was cancelled on April Fool's Day as well and they thought it was a joke. As a Young Man, Smokey would watch Guiding Light as well as Search For Tomorrow and as many folks know in future years Two Guiding Light Alumnae worked on Motown Movies. Billy Dee Williams & James Earl Jones both played Dr. Jim Frazier at different times being some of the First Black Actors on Soaps. In later years, Motown's Music was played on Guiding Light. You know what's also so sad. In 1979 after Marvin left Motown he asked Smokey for a $5000.00 Dollar Loan because he was broke. Smokey said "No!" when Marvin asked why Smokey said "It will end up your nose!" as a result the two friends didn't speak for three years. Marvin moved to Belgium for awhile but came back after his Mother got sick. In 1983 Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys asked his Big Brother Brian for a Loan of Money for Cocaine and Brian said No. He had done one of the most amazing recoveries in Rock Music probably of all time, and Dennis was very angry with him. Three Days after Xmas and nearly Three Weeks after his 39th Birthday Dennis Carl Wilson would die on December 28th 1983. Thirty Nine Years before Corrie Ten Boom was released from Ravensbrouck Concentration Camp in 1944 which was a Prison Camp for Political Folks who were fighting The Nazis, her Family helped hide Jewish Folks and all of her Family Members died except her. The Good Lord really "Protected" him because he's the only Soul Survivor from his time, the others are all dead. Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Frankie Lymon, Barry White, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, and several of The Isley Brothers. I would have loved for him to have gone to Europe and talk to the "Kids" who were getting their feet wet in Boy Bands/Girl Groups and tell them about everything he went through. He was 14 when he started his First Group The Five Chimes that became The Matadors & Then The Miracles then Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Since Motown's Music was used on Eastenders during a TV Special back in the day, that would have been great and it was always popular.

  6. Marvin Gaye’s death affected everyone who would think a father would murder his own son because of his jealousy. Even thought he’s physically dead Marvin Gays legacy will live on forever he was that wonderful. No one will ever be the entertainer he was. Marvin was one of a kind his father made him larger than life.

  7. I remember a neighbor telling others about it and I thought it was one of several ridiculous rumors I heard during that time but I heard it in the radio the next morning and thought to myself “Damn she was telling the truth!”

  8. 30 years ago, Smokey Robinson beat out other famous men in a "Best Eyes" poll I guess it was.
