How Marvin Gaye’s Murder Affected Smokey Robinson | Oprah’s Master Class | Oprah Winfrey Network

On April 1, 1984, Motown superstar Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father. More than 30 years later, Smokey Robinson, Marvin’s longtime friend and musical collaborator, still remembers where he was when he heard the news. “I’m in my car, and I’m listening to the radio,” he says. “And the disc jokey interrupts the programming to say, ‘Soul singer Marvin Gaye was pronounced dead on arrival at so and so hospital.'”
Considering the date, Smokey says his first thought was that this was a cruel April Fool’s Day joke. Then, he pulled over at a gas station and called Marvin’s ex-wife, Anna. “As soon as she heard my voice, she said, ‘Yes, baby, its true,'” he says. “That was…just unacceptable to my psyche”. In the above video, Smokey shares how he learned to accept the fact that Marvin was gone. For more on #masterclass, visit http://bit.ly/1ZQfeZO

  1. They had a very intense friendship, but they were very close. When Smokey got clean, he tried to help Marvin, but Marvin was too far gone into his addiction and problems at by then. They even had a falling out once over Smokey refusing to loan him money. Smokey said he knew what Marvin was going to do with it, so he didn't give him the money and that led to them not speaking for a couple of years. Marvin was rumored to had originally supposed to sing Smokey's hit "Being With You", but he passed on the offer, because he was still mad at Smokey from their falling out. They had only recently rekindled their friendship only a couple of years before Marvin's death. But you can hear in his voice, that he's still very hurt all these years later, by losing his friend. You can see him literally trying to not cry.

  2. That night watching the 10 o'clock news with a recent picture of Marvin Gaye and the numbers 1939-1984 thinking "I know they're not going to say what I think they're about to say". It was unbelievable and to hear it was his father.

  3. It amazes me that a tortured soul as Marvin Gaye could bring so much joy to his fans. It's sad that he had to leave this earth by the hands of his father but, Marvin Gaye was weary and he wanted to rest

  4. I remember Smokey relating the story of when Marvin called him early morning takin about goin runnin in Detriot 20 degree cold so he can get in shape to 'try out with the NFL Detroit Lions'…Lol!!!
