Rakim recently sat down for a live edition of the Touré Show podcast, and in this clip he breaks down several of the songs that he considers his best work. The tracks he named are “Mystery (Who is God?),” “Juice,” and “Mahogany,” which he says was inspired by Diana Ross in the 1972 film Lady Sings the Blues.

To hear more of their conversation, including why Rakim says he pushes himself to rhyme at an elite level, hit the above clip.

  1. He is not only saying something he is telling wisdom in his rap not like the other bad rappers like Wayne or any street gangsta rap also Eminem he is writing too many rhymes without meaning just fast rap and rhyming I have nothing about Eminem color but he is not a good writer I see that rakim is the best then the teacher krs one and nas !!

  2. Yeah but Busta Rhymes and Eminem did albums on aftermath and they didnt resort to gangsta lyrics. Dre let them be themselves. You gotta dumb it down a bit for the masses but i cant see Dre asking Rakim to rap about low riders and crack selling

  3. speical ed wasn't lying about nwa been programmed to destory the black community. even after dr.dre was fifthy rich and living in white folks area for over 13 years. he still want to destory black folks. smh.

  4. Regardless the album woulda been amazing. I wish Ra woulda just done the album. But I understand he beyond that gangsta shit. But a Rakim Gangsta Rap album produced by Dre woulda been the greatest album ever.

  5. I don't trust cars they break down I've been on a plane about 4 times at 11 I decided no never been on one again it on thing to break down on the road you don't want to break down in the air. God bless all who fly.

  6. He shoulda stuck with Dre. At least release one gangster rap track by Dre. That shit with Truth Hurts was dope but not gangster. Now it’s too late. Dre about to be 60 and still ain’t got no real sequel album.

  7. It doesn't make sense when you look at Dre's discography. There are many albums he was involved with that didn't fit the traditional "Gangsta Rap" mold – DOC's debut album, JJ Fad's first album, Eminem's albums, Busta Rhymes, Raekwon, Jimmy Z's Muzical Madness,. Not to mention songs for the likes of LL, Gwen Stefani, Eve, Mary J.

I have a feeling it's more of a Ra problem (and I'm a Ra fan)

  8. Peace God!! The best of the best! Definition of a god walking!! Never compromised his integrity for money or fame!! So in return he get his respect that is due to him!! Stay blessed Almighty like Busta Rhymes usually calls you

  9. I hope one day gangster rap will just stop, songs like “put it all to music” or “when I B on tha mic” or “holy are you” are not gangster rap but I fucks with it lol we all need to participate in stopping to push gangster rap up front.

  10. Rakim is a really good and respected MC but it was a bad move for him to sign with Nurse Lame since rakim is an icon he should started his own label it didn't mix well right from the get go

  11. I take seven emcees put 'em in a line

And add seven more brothers who think they can rhyme

Well, it'll take seven more before I go for mine

Now that's twenty-one emcees ate up at the same time

  12. Dre should’ve let Rakim be Rakim. Too bad he tried to change what works. Proud of Rakim for NOT fallin for that “trash talking” type of hip hop he wanted him to do.
