James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006), better known by the stage names J Dilla and Jay Dee, was an American record producer who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. According to his obituary at NPR.org, he “was one of the music industry’s most influential hip-hop artists, working for big-name acts including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, MF Doom, The Pharcyde and Common.”

  1. My favorite J Dilla beats are……
" Thelonius" – Common Fea. Slum Village.
" Raise It Up " – Slum Village
    " The Red " – Jaylib
    " 5 Ella Remix" – 5 Elements
" Look Of Love Remix" – Slum Village

  2. the godfather of lofi, i think the best music these days is made by people alone in their rooms with cheap equipment, you dont need a studio anymore, my friend who is a music producer got me into J dilla, it completely changed my perspective of music production, my friend has been there a lot for me and taught me a lot, I wanna throw him some love, he's just released his first beat, please try searching Lonely Gimmick – BEAT 1, you may be in for a surprise and he would love to hear your thoughts

  3. J Dilla didn't do the original version of "Stressed Out" by A Tribe Called Quest. It was produced by "The Uhmah" which consisted of three members, One of the members of The Uhmah is J Dilla the others being Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad yet that particular beat did not come from J Dilla. It was Ali Shaheed Muhammad who made that. You can tell by how it was structured. You can compare it to the song "Gravity" by Bush Babees, and "Got" by Mos Def.
