  1. I started to know the Crusaders by their album "Hollywood " in 1972. Thereafter, I started collecting all of their albums. By then we called their albums "LP's. In South Africa by then, they were a hit even today they are still a hit. We also salute them for having grazed our shores – South Africa. Viva And Long Live Crusaders.

  2. Joe Sample solos are very melodic ,he told "stories" when he improvised R.I.P…..Miles Davis used to say ..""i'am not a trumpet player ,i am a musician , i use the trumpet to tell "stories"…suddenly came in to my mind Bruce Lee in the Enter the Dragon movie ,he said ,"Don't think. FEEEEEEEEL! It's like a finger pointing away to the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger or you will miss all of the heavenly glory!"

  3. What I notice watching this clip for probably the hundredth time, is how like all great groups, they're just totally dialed into and listening to each other. Stix Hooper always has his head on a swivel between Felder and Sample. But check out around 5:40 as Pops is laying down that silky smooth slap line and starts shouting something, like they're getting ready to take off and then Larry holds his hand up like just a sec, I got something else. Then they all just come roaring back with everyone on point to finish strong and hit the crescendo at the exact same time. Just amazing, the whole set.

  4. I thought of myself as a young hotshot blues/rock guitarist in the early/mid '70s – then I heard Larry Carlton with The Crusaders. I was a moment where my life changed direction. I thought "That guy knows everything about the guitar but he just closes his eyes and plays." That was the point where I decided to really learn the instrument well enough that I could forget about it and just play.

  5. One of my few regrets in life was not seeing The Crusaders live. I found out about them later in life as Joe Sample was already in his solo career. Wilton Felder had to be the calmest man in the world.
