I would argue that the most used sample is Amen Brother by The Winstons. The drum break in that track has become far more influencial than "La Di Da Di".
In Pines of Rome, Respighi wrote into the score a que to start a gramophone of bird sound effects in the 3rd movement. I'd call that the earliest occurrence I know of (1928)
