JayQuan explains methodically why Grandmaster Melle Mel is the greatest MC; based on originality/innovation, clever rhymes and impact on the genre. Written, narrated & edited by JayQuan. thafoundation.com
I give it to him because I can't fade the rap on "I Feel For You"
"Only God knows what you go,n do" that line was used by RUN,DMC on sucker MC, i recognized that line when Sucker. MC, first came out, over 25y ago29.51 in other words i didn't hear a peek from a place call everywhere
Superbly narrated Brethren. In terms of Melle Mel, for those who know Hip Hop it's unanimous. He held the throne FIRST. His influence is ever present in every generation that proceeded him.
Damn, I'm bout to be 54 and I know a lot of this but there are a few things that I'm going "oh shit?"
I agree with the importance of Mel. I compare him to Dr. J. All our greats model their games off of both and youngsters barely know the originators, but all of us who were there, know.
1,2,3,4 just let me know what you came here for, this simple line was Dope
THANK YOU!!!!! MELL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED THE GOAT BEFORE ANYONE ELSE!!!!! HE "EXPANDED" WHAT AN MC COULD BE WITHOUT ANY REAL PEERS. HE WAS THE VERY DEFINITION OF AHEAD OF HIS TIME!!!! BEFORE YOUR FAVORITE MC WAS BORN OR EVEN RAPPING HE WAS EXPANDING IT!!! GREAT LYRICIST, AND STORY TELLERS IN RAP OWE MELLE!! THATS BIG, RAKIM, SLICK RICK, KANE,EM, PAC HELL BASICALLY EVERYONE IS A OFF SHOOT OF THE GREAT MELLE!!
Mele Mel…not Melle Mel. Why do people misspell his name?
Damn Right !!! I grew up with this and still really can't touch his stuffNice raw hard only one close is LL
No one thinks he is number 1 😂😂😂
I'm a 70's baby so I came up in NY during Melle Mel's era, I can't disagree with you on any of your points. I'm just of the mind that Rakim did all the same things to a larger degree and impact. Rakim had a few significant firsts and is probably the most influential Emcee. Melle Mel definitely was a first in many things and that can't be argued, but for me Rakim is the GOAT.
Excellent documentation …important work by JayQuan … I am extremely pleased to have found this video in the web …. will send it out to friends of the old , middle and new schools of Rap and also Trap
I know Daddy-O (Stet) personally and he always talks about Melle Mel as the GOAT
One hundred brother
Melle Mel is the TRUE G.O.A.T
Shit what about SURVIVAL shit Only the strong can survive its called Survival!!!
Good vid. I've thought about this very topic in the past.
I am a KRS-1 disciple. I learned a lot watching your video. I have always loved Mel and I play the Beat Street song to my students to compare decades of unchange. Thank you so much for the lesson. I will share this video. Evidence is clear, Melly Mel deserves that title of GOAT. I watch another video where KRS said it as well. It moved me because, I tell my students that KRS IS MY TEACHER. For KRS to say Mel is the greatest, stamped the confirmation. Thank you again for knowledge.
Mele Mel, Koo Moe D, and Grandmaster Caz, the top 3 M.C.s (not Rappers) the were true Masters of the Ceremony and they could definitely Move the Crowd, and yes, there are other great MCs, but None as important or as influential as these 3
Prophecy nah, b4 it was rap it was toasting~b4 that deu.28 & YASHAYA is the WORD~
Melle Mel legend GOAT hands down!!!👑🎤🔥🤘

Man! God was given Melle Mel a prophylactic mike and knew and still knows how to Rock the mike! Nobody knew that his music is still happening to this day. I’m 40 years old and playing his music for the today’s generation, and everyone dances and loves the lyrics. His music will live on for many generations to come.
Brother you always do an excellent job. Yes my era. The end of disco created what you now call hip hop
Today pop culture & the sports world revere Michael Jordan as the Goat in basketball but the pop & rap world don't know about Mel Caz & Moe D let alone discuss anyone of them as "top 5 rappers DOA". Thanks again Jayquan for teaching the truth. Keep on keeping on Peace7
Those dudes looked like grown folks as teenagers
Don't forget his illuminating verse on back on block.. incredible…
Dope break down. I knew Mel was one of the greatest but you probably have convinced me that he is thee greatest.
There is only one GOAT ( Melle Mel ) and the rest are sheep.
MELLE MEL/TOOK MOTOWN TO THE UNIVERSE/CAZ CREATED THIS THING WE CALL HIP-HOP!!!
Should be top 10 on any list. Lyrics and voice for days. A true pioneer who is more significant than all guys out today combined.
LOLOLOL…don't make no excuses for those who may think this may sound "primitive"…maybe they jus' need to step their game up, and broaden their musical ear when it comes to Hip Hop; and stay off the junk food snack rappers like Pac, Biggie, Jay, and all these new mumbo-jumbo, "trapped in the concrete jungle" rappers!!! This song is STILL HOT…and groovy…and Melle Mel is SAYIN' SOMETHIN' worthwhile…even if it is jus' some lyrical stuff! Peace…
A newspaper burns in the sand
And the headlines say 'Man Destroys Man'
Extra extra, read all the bad news
On the war for peace that everybody would lose
The rise and fall, the last great empire
The sound of the whole world caught on fire
The ruthless struggle, the desperate gamble
The game that left the whole world in shambles
The cheats, the lies, the alibies
And the foolish attempts to conquer the sky
Lost in space, and what is it worth?
Huh, the President just forgot about Earth
Spendin' multi-billions and maybe even trillions
The cost of weapons ran in the zillions
There's gold in the street and there's diamond under feet
And the children in Africa don't even eat
Flies on their faces, they're livin' like mice
And their houses even make the ghetto look nice
Huh, the water tastes funny, it's forever too sunny
And they work all month and don't make no money
A fight for power, a nuclear shower
A people shout out in the darkest hour
Sights unseen and voices unheard
And finally the bomb gets the last word
Christians killed Muslims and Germans killed Jews
And everybody's bodies are used and abused
Huh, minds are poisoned and souls are polluted
Superiority complex is deep rooted
Leeches and lices, and people got prices
Egomaniacs control the self-righteous
Nothin' is sacred and nothin' is pure
So the revelation of death is our cure
Peoples in terror, the leaders made a error
And now they can't even look in the mirror
Cause we gotta suffer while things get rougher
And that's the reason why we got to get tougher
So learn from the past and work for the future
And don't be a slave to no computer
Cause the children of Man inherit the land
And the future of the world is in your hands
So just throw your hands in the air
And wave em like you just don't care
And if you believe that you're the future
Scream it out and say oh yeah (Oh yeah)
Oh yeah (Oh yeah)
Beat Street Breakdown, rrrrhaa!
Melvin Glover / Reggie Griffin
I just saw a video of Kris Parker talking about how he battled Mel at the Latin Quarters and how he made him look funny. What a joke. Mel and the people he surrounded himself with were the greatest ever. Mel said once 40 years ago, “don’t be a SLAVE to no computer” look around right now! Robots are now building other robots. You may think it sounds crazy. After he talked about the girl putting the baby in the garbage pail, a few yers later you could go to a hospital, church, firehouse and leave your baby with no questions asked
-NoteWhen asked what the best song of all time was on the red carpet to the Grammys. Darryl Hall from Hall and Oates looked right in the camera said “The message by Grand Master Flash”
This was incredible!
4:27 is that 2pac real father?
did mell sing on those songs like you can't keep running away or was it another group???
Very educational. Melle Mel definitely ahead of his time. #Legendary Legendary. I would say The message is the epitome of HipHop/Rap music. Godbless you.
I enjoyed this video very much. The part about DJ's being MC's and vice versa reminded me about what I wrote below…
I agree Melle Mel is one of the best if not THE best rappers that ever rapped.
I'm not sure how old Melle Mel is, perhaps he listened to New York radio as a child.
Jocko Henderson was a NY DJ way way back in the day, I haven't seen if you made a documentary/ video about him but he was recorded rapping on the air in the 1950's & 1960's.
Look up here on youtube… WADO 1280 New York – Jocko Henderson Rapping – 1965
He was rappin' on the radio even earlier WOV 1280am New York – Doug Jocko Henderson – 1957
Perhaps Jocko may have influenced Mel. Just sayin'.
Jocko – Everybody's Uptight was my favorite tune of his. I do believe he was up there age wise when he recorded that song.
Thumbs up! 👍🏼
45:35 he sounds just like kanye
I'm 28 and i consider Melle Mel one of the top mc's, it's not about age, it's about love for real hip-hop. Peace brother
the song the truth was the truth defo hes the greatest
I’ve been hip hop since I was a kid in ‘83, and been listening to hip hop since ‘78.
This is best video I have ever seen in regards to hip hop history.
Rakim is my favorite emcee, but no doubt, Melle truly is G.O.A.T., period, end of story.
45:35 he sounding so much like kanye tho
