5 Ways to Increase Your High Without More Cannabis

The psychoactive effects of cannabis can be powerful, but depending on the quality of your strain or the quantity you’ve taken, those effects can wane all too quickly. Wondering if you can increase your high without doubling up on the dose?

The answer is yes, you can, and we’ll show you how.

Best of all, the solutions for ramping up the effects of cannabis are remarkably simple, cheap (free in some cases), and can be achieved by anyone. From taking a t-break to taking a tea break, here are our best tips for enhancing the stone:

FYI, if consuming cannabis is illegal where you live, then these tips aren’t for you

Change Your Strain

This is a simple tip if you find you’re no longer getting the same psychoactive kick from your cannabis. It’s not just regular use that impacts your cannabis tolerance – if you usually smoke the same old strain, even if it’s a good one, chances are your body is going to get used to dealing with that amount of THC.

By varying your strains, you’re introducing your endocannabinoid system to new terpenes and different cannabinoid levels, which means the potential for different effects than you’re used to. Try something with a higher THC content.

Change Your Method

Are you loyal to joints, vehement on vaping, or do you only ever do bong hits? Like anything else, your body will eventually adapt to your method of marijuana use and know what to expect. Sure, you’ll get high, but change it up once in a while and see if you notice a difference in just how high you get.

Blazing a different trail can lead to new adventures, so why not give another method a chance? If you only ever smoke your weed, give your lungs a break and try edibles. Make some brownies, or try gummies. A word of caution, though: Edibles take longer to have an effect, and that effect typically lasts a good deal longer than smoking cannabis. Don’t down two brownies in ten minutes and wonder why nothing’s happened yet because there’s a good chance that half an hour later, you’ll regret it!

Change Your Habits

If you’re a daily or frequent cannabis user, you’ve probably found yourself using more and more weed in your joints to reach a pleasant buzz. This is because cannabis is like a lot of other substances in that steady use leads to your body developing a tolerance.

Even just a short-term break can give your endocannabinoid system a chance to reset, and when you eventually blaze up again, the weed will have a greater effect. A 2016 study at Yale University backed this up, finding that CB1 cannabinoid receptor availability in the body lessens over time with daily use. Still, just two days of abstinence increased receptor availability – and a four-week break saw receptor availability return to levels close to those of non-cannabis users[i].

Change Your Snacks

It’s no secret that stoners love a snack – but while most of us often reach for salty, carby foods like potato chips when the munchies hit, there are some foods out there that can stretch out your high and potentially satiate your appetite at the same time.

Mangoes are magical – not only are they healthy, delicious and refreshing, they happen to contain myrcene as well. Myrcene belongs to the terpene class of compounds, and terpenes are responsible for the flavours and aromas found in cannabis. Those terpenes go straight into the bloodstream, and when THC hits the bloodstream, it quickly starts to interact with the terpenes and leads to what many report to be a more intense and longer-lasting high. It’s often recommended to chomp on some mango before you take cannabis, as although it’s effective either side of a smoke, eating mango beforehand seems to get the best results.

However, this may depend on the individual and the effectiveness of their metabolism. The same rule applies to most foods that contain terpenes, so broccoli and nuts can potentially have the same effect and better yet, you can munch on at these at length and enjoy the health benefits without having to worry about your waistline!

Change Your Workouts

You’ve maybe heard the expression ‘runner’s high’ at some point – this refers to the chemical rush that athletes experience during a good cardio workout. It may surprise you that there’s a high to be had in the literal sense from combining weed and working out.

A study carried out in 2013 found that cardiovascular exercises such as running, swimming, and cycling can raise blood-THC levels by 15%. This works by releasing dormant THC from fat stores and serves as a surprising incentive to hit the gym.[iii] If you’ve been putting off getting into shape, here’s another reason to start working out – a lot of THC is stored in body fat, making it slow to release and restricting the quality of your high. Reducing body fat through diet and exercise can theoretically enhance the effects of marijuana.
