Adam Yauch Interview: Why Beastie Boy Became a Buddhist
Ten years ago, Beastie Boys played their final gig ever at Bonnaroo. Soon after, the band announced that member Adam “MCA” Yauch had been diagnosed with cancer. Yauch, who passed away in 2012, was known for his oddball style and flow on the mic but also for his social activism. He advocated for women’s rights and for a free Tibet. In 1996, he spoke with Inside Edition’s sister show American Journal about why he converted to Buddhism after a trip to Nepal and how he staged the Tibetan Freedom Concert to raise awareness about the plight of the Buddhist people. #InsideEdition

Sadly the place has turned into a sterile Disneyland to the point that you hardly find a Tibetan flag for sale as some 'Free Tibet' related object that would get the crass mass tourism getting sensibilized to the cause. Got into a talk yesterday with the youth leader of the national Democratic Party for Tibet, where I had mentioned what represents the Tibetan cause for people of my generation, HH the Dalai Lama to the wonderful and compassionate Tibetans and largely Buddhist around the world. Then it appears your name as a band, MCA as a music media leader that got to enlighten the youth with the Tibetan issue. The kid was hardly turning into his late 20's. I had founded quite reassuring that the younger Tibetan generations still remember your name as a great musical and political influences so far. So I just wanted to thank you for the influence, the cultural heritage and the inspiration. Very best regards.
Tibet is a large part of what is considered China. I hope the struggle revives and persists. I haven't heard much of it in the past decade or so; and Adam Yauch was shining an important light on it. I worked at a modern rock radio station in New York in the 90s and the Beatiez were heroes of my childhood. It was amazing to the the contrast between the wild videos and stage presence and interviews like this.
