This introduced rap to the mainstream after it was featured on Time magazine. It was released in mid summer 1982 but it wasn't popular yet in the L.A. area until the the end of 1982. Time wrote about how realistic and dramatic the lyrics were. Most rap had been about fun and having a good time like Rapper's Delight. This song changed the course of rap and it was huge when it became popular. A few other songs on the album became hits like Scorpio, written in 1981, and New York New York (early 1983). This was quality music with intelligent lyrics.
I was right rocker in 80’s and USA music was for us a “ breeze of freedom “ in our life in the communistic regime in Slovakia under control of Moscow . But one evening I heard the Message of Grandmaster Flash. i’ ve changed my mind and I ´ ve started to listen all kind of music from this free world . It helped us very much to wait for the collapse of socialiism in 1989 !!
