In Vietnam, over a few short decades, hip hop pioneers like Vietmax, Wowy, Ha Le, and Suby One have taken the scene from a niche interest to a driving cultural force.
We meet these four in the studio of B-Boy/visual artist Vietmax to talk about the challenges they’ve faced, the community they’ve built, and the inspiration they’ve taken from each other along the way.
Theirs is a community that has strengthened their craft, broken down barriers, and created a form of hip hop which is positive, inclusive, and distinctly Vietnamese.

Just know that hip-hop and rap was hugely judged by mainland and by immigrants in US. Hip hop was more welcoming little by little. Viet Rap started in US and wasn't accepted until officially in late 2014 with a concert held in Hanoi. The one that paved the ways for hip hop/rap artists were those living in US via Khanh Nho, Phong Le, GVR production, Thai Viet G, Viet Dragon, etc.
Vietnamese hip hop still grow up ⬆️⬆️⬆️

I am a middle aged white man from Sweden, but I can appreciate how Hip Hop has become a worldwide cultural expression of youth. I remember when we thought it was just a passing fad. Going strong 30+ years now!

I really admire Vietnamese culture and people. I had the privilege of visiting and living in Ho Chi Minh city for a month and met some of the best friends I still have a few years later. Love from USA to Vietnam my friends!!!!

Seems like theyre more interested in the idea of hip-hop than actual hip-hop. Cool tho
Viet rapper here, Hip-Hop is a lifestyle is how you express yourself, it does not belong to anyone. In-fact due to oppression in America is what lead Black-culture to developed Hip-hop to express themselves in the first place. I think VN is a lil baby in the Hip-Hop game at the moment in-fact we're often looked down upon, so I think this movement is good for our people to express ourselves and to compete with other nations to gain their respect.
The accents are so north I can’t understand what there saying lmao
