Labi Siffre – The Vulture (1975)

Biography by Jon Azpiri: London-born singer Labi Siffre has spent his career breaking down boundaries. The openly gay singer has built a small cult following with works that deal squarely with homophobia and racism. In addition to his nine albums, the multi-talented Siffre has written three books of poetry and has also written for the stage.

Musically, Siffre is known for his soulful, high-pitched voice and thought-provoking lyrics. His single “I Got The” from his 1975 album Remember My Song received a modicum of fame decades after its release when its funky piano hook was sampled in Eminem’s 1999 debut smash single “My Name Is.” In 1988, Siffre had a hit with his anti-apartheid anthem “(Something Inside) So Strong,” a song that embodies his vocal talents and his social conscience.

  1. They call me the vulture cause that's my name

I fly high, around the town, looking for game

Any girl who's lost her man i'm by her side, as fast as i can

And i tell her things that she wants to hear, i'm an evil man

Oh oh oh i'm a vulture

I say, now that is over what you gonna do

I'm so sad that you're on your own

And your heart is a shelter

That man is gone and is gone for good

He's gone and he's never coming back

And the love that you had that was beautiful

But it's dead that is a fact

If you're looking for consolation you don't have to look no more

And i fold my wings around the girl i've made it for sure

    Oh oh i'm a vulture

When i fly into town the work is around

The vulture's here you'd better tie your baby down

Take a girl for a drink, take her out for something to eat

Leave her just for a little while, take a nature retreat

By the time, i've made it back, i've got a name, address and a date

And you can see by the far away look in her eyes

That you've made it there much too late

Oh oh oh i'm a vulture

Vulture's got class, vulture's got style

Vulture can heal her, with a look or a smile

Vulture's in town, so you'd better beware

Married or single, i just don't care

Oh oh oh i'm a vulture

  2. Damn man i can really see where Jamoroquoi got his influence lol. From the strings to the smooth singing, it's clear how influential this man was to a number of careers over many decades and genres

  3. the wondrous drum break on this song is by the master Ian Wallace (RIP) along with the premier league of UK session musicians at the time including Chas (RIP) and Dave, arranged by Big Jim (RIP)

  4. I am not going to lie, i heard this song first on driver parallel lines but i payed little to no attention to the lyrics… hahaha
he might be a vulture, but at least is sincere… hahaha amazing the skill of manipulative people to disguise themselves as sincere people… sometimes they seem to be more cool than the real deal. thanks for the upload!

  5. one of the most unsung heroes of music, music has been picked apart and sampled in untold numbers of songs, even his vocal style was stolen, (jk), for listeners not born from the 70's or those well versed in good music, this artist was one of the greats,

  6. What an amazing composition. The slight swing of the drums, the dynamic orchestral and brass arrangement, the soulful lyricism, and don't forget that nasty bassline in the verse. There is so much going on from a musical point of view, but it can be appreciated so easily just as one badass song.
