In the 80s everybody wanted to trascend, and they nailed it. After 40 years, in 2023, we are still watching this with an strong admiration, since many in the 80s thought that we would evolve into something more sophisticated or more meaningful. If people in the 80s looked at what we've become, they would be happy to stay in the 80s and only in the 80s. Period.
So I was born in 87 and throughout the years I never took the time to watch this series…until today. When this scene played out….I was absolutely speechless as I let out a loud “OH MY GOD” because I couldn’t believe how fkn cool this was entire part was playing out. Easily the COOLEST scene in television history.
As with much of what Michael Mann has put his fingers on, Miami Vice was an existential masterpiece. There's a soul in there – that isn't in the dialogue, it's not spoken out loud – but it's in the shots, the setup, what's NOT said, and in the look. From this show, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Collateral, and more – Mann always captured something that dug to a deeper level, something that left you with more to consider than you bargained for – even in a cop show. To me, that was what separated Miami Vice from the rest of the pack.
