I wonder, before I read every comment, if EVERYONE KNOWS, that Leon Russel wrote this song, and NO ONE, seemingly, has every phrased it better. Hands Down. By Chance, I know, as I can hear, as a career musician, and an admirer, of this particular song, that Christine, got her version from Gladys, and Gladys , chose her phrasing to not copy, the ORIGINATOR. This could never be a sexist , discrimination, as when your vulnerable, or grieving, or just plain sad, It is not easy to bend the blues into a ballad, and communicate the emotion,and for my purpose, the reason a singer would begin a sung line, on the 1st beat of the measure, is that the 2nd half of the measured meter , has the inflection of soulful,and pensive pain . I listened to this 1000 times from the late 60’s, when I was 15. I own my own piece of it,and I can sing every line in the song, ya hear me. I sang it to my first love. My brother and sister, feel a way, about it. No nastiness, it’s about un-pretentious representation, of a master class. Leon Russell, who as well wrote ‘Masquerade’ that George Benson made famous.
