Happy Birthday Ann Peebles! Listen to title track from her 1973 album ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’ now.
“This wonderful album, originally released in 1974 on the Memphis-based Hi Records label, deserved a wider audience than it ended up getting at the time. It played to Ann Peebles’ great strength, her poised and sultry voice, and surrounded by the sparse, easy funkiness of the trademark Hi rhythm section and producer Willie Mitchell’s perfect use of horns and strings, she sings like a resilient but disappointed angel on this impressive set of songs about the darker side of love. Her best song is here, the eccentric but brilliant “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” along with a marvelous version of Joe Simon’s “(You Keep Me) Hangin’ On,” and perfect readings of a pair of Earl Randle songs, “If We Can’t Trust Each Other” and “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.” Peebles sings her heart out, and with those somehow bright-sounding Hi grooves behind her, it all comes together to make a classic album of dark, bouncy, and beautiful Southern soul.” – Steve Leggett/AMG

Lyrics:
I can’t stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can’t stand the rain ‘gainst my window
‘Cause he’s not here with me
Hey window pain do you remember
How sweet it used to be
When we were together
Everything was so grand, yes it was
Now that we’ve parted
And there’s one sound that I just can’t stand
I can’t stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can’t stand the rain
Alone with the pillow
Where his head used to lay, yeah
I know you’ve got some sweet memories
But like a window you ain’t got nothin’ to say
I can’t stand the rain against my window
Bringing back sweet memories, hey
I can’t stand the rain, ooh
Against my window, oh-no-no
‘Cause he’s not here with me, uh
Alone with the pillow, uh-uh
Where his head used to lay, yeah
I know you’ve got some sweet memories
But like a window
You ain’t got nothin’ to say, hey-hey
Uh-uh
(I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, can’t stand the rain)
(I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, can’t stand the rain)
(I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, can’t stand the rain)
(I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, can’t stand the rain)
(I can’t, I can’t, I can’t, can’t stand the rain)
Get off my window now, get off my window
Get off my window nah, I can’t stand the rain
I can’t stand the rain, ooh, can’t stand the rain, oh

None other than John Lennon reportedly called “I Can’t Stand the Rain” the greatest song ever. Not sure about that but it is a magnificent tune.
Beep beep who got the keys to my jeep… Vrooooommmmm…..
I was 11 when my Mum gave me my first cassette player & a tape for Christmas. 1979. A compilation. This was, & is the One that has got me through my life. My reliable song. This moves me. My inheritance.
Ann Peebles so glad I got to hear this original version after hearing Tina Turner version both have amazing voices ❤
Bellissima
I try to get people to listen to this and they don't care. This is great stuff
I am Dutch and live in Greece. This morning I bought te single at a British bar her in Greece. The bar was closing, they did not survived the Covid situation. And they were selling all of there stuff. Including the I Can’t Stand The Rain single in a list.
It is now hanging on the wall next to my bass guitar.
Just rediscovered this after so many years and so glad I did. What a classic, and it isn’t even raining, Stu X
In the 80s in LA, this song played every Sunday on the Sunday oldies on 102.3 KJLH.
I LOVE this song. My ex introduced me to it and I've loved it ever since.
Ann wrote it. She sang it. But Tina really made it the outstanding hit. Even Lowell George recorded a decent version. Love 'em all, but Tina Turner's remains my favorite.
!
Saved up for weeks to buy this single back in the day!! Terrific song, beautifully sung by Ann Peebles.
John Lennon knows quality music when he hear it!!
Window pane…
who here from rolling stone?
I was in first year at Aston uni. in Birmingham….the time of the pub bombs ….Birmingham became a miserable unwelcoming place to be…..not wot a fresher student usually enjoys ! ….this album came out…I sat in the window of my student shit hole, I couldn't stand the rain against my window. But with the company of Ann Peebles, "I felt some sunshine in my life, I cant stand the rain……" as she sings on a later on in her brilliant soulful album….. a very late thanks Ann Peebles 4 decades later….as we all know , music can be a great comfort !
Me looking at comments thinking all the pictures of guys are the same person…
Her voice is the whole eternity. The rhythm of her songs is amazing, groovy, deep. Can listen to this endlessly. Hopefully, Apple Music brings her songs in lossless format soon.
High Fidelity brought me here… amazing track
Hard to say whose version is better: Miss Peebles or Tina Turner.
I can't stand the rain
Against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
Hey, window pane
Do you remember
How sweet it used to be
When we was together
Everything was so grand
Now that we've parted
Just one sound
That I just can't stand
I can't stand the rain
Against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can't stand the rain
Against my window
'Cause he's not here with me
When we was together
Everything was so grand
Now that we've parted
Just one sound
That I just can't stand
I can't stand the rain
I can't stand the rain
Against my window
Bringing back sweet memories
I can't stand the rain
Against my window
Just keeps on haunting me
Hey, hey, rain
Won't you go away?
Come back and haunt me
On another day
Rain
Rain
Eh, rain
Rain
Rain against my window pane
Oh, yes, it is
Rain
Rain
Rain against my window pane
Well, well, rain
Rain
Rain, oh, oh, eh, rain
Rain
Rain against my window pane
Rain
Just go away
Come back and get me
On another day
Hey, hey, rain
Rain
Rain against my window pane
Rain
Just go away
Come back and get me
On another day
Rain
Rain against my window pane
Oh, rain
Yeah
Yeah, rain
Against my, my window pane
Rain
Rain
Don't touch me now
Rain
Playin' with my mind
Playin' with my heart
Rain
Eh, eh, oh, ah
Against my, my window, window pane
1973: more laidback and soulful
1978: more energetic
1997: futuristic sample
All versions are good!
My girlfriend just asked me if I could hear the rain and I just started singing this song. I loved it all those years ago even though I was only 9
This is the 'original' and best version by far! All of those other (so-called) versions….make me wanna puke! Long live Ann Peebles!
great voice
We're still here in June 2021 and it has been raining for weeks! Hurricane season on deck.
I loved this song on first hearing it back in 1973, still got the 45rpm. A classic song and what a singer.
My favorite rain song.
