Are you a fan of 90s hip-hop? If so, then you’ve probably heard of The Basement Pete Rock, a legendary producer who helped define the sound of that era. His beats are still played today, and his influence can be heard in the work of countless contemporary producers. But who is The Basement Pete Rock, and what makes his music so special?
The Basement Pete Rock, born Peter O. Phillips, got his start in the early 90s as part of the group Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. Along with rapper C.L. Smooth, Pete Rock released two classic albums, Mecca and the Soul Brother and The Main Ingredient. These albums were critically acclaimed and helped establish Pete Rock as a master of the craft.
So what sets The Basement Pete Rock’s music apart from other producers? For one thing, he was known for his use of jazz and soul samples, which gave his beats a timeless quality. His drums were also distinctive, with a hard-hitting, boom-bap sound that was perfect for the gritty, street-level rhymes of artists like Nas and Wu-Tang Clan.
Today, The Basement Pete Rock’s influence can be heard in the work of countless producers. His use of samples and hard-hitting drums inspired a generation of beatmakers, and his collaborations with artists like Nas and Method Man helped define the sound of East Coast hip-hop. Even now, over 25 years after his debut, his beats are still considered some of the best in the game.
In conclusion, The Basement Pete Rock is a legendary producer who changed the game. His unique sound and innovative approach to sampling helped define the sound of 90s hip-hop, and his legacy lives on today. If you’re a fan of classic hip-hop, then you owe it to yourself to check out the work of The Basement Pete Rock.

I'ma drop one of my old rhymes on this throwback beat called "Subterranean Zone". Don't give a shit who talk smack….
Verse 1:
Take you to a spot that's so mysterious
where some take pride and don't take too serious
filled with a great number of potential lyricists
and alot of well known ones from your favorite list
instead of killing hip hop they make sure it subsist
and there's no room for all these fake rap artists
where we use more than catchy hooks to move the crowd
and our speech and emotions speak equally loud
it's so mellow that I call it my 2nd home
and I describe it as the subterranean zone
Verse 2:
Subterranean; you ask what's the connotation
it's beneath the earth's surface; it's number 1 location
don't be perplexed I'm not speaking literally
but rather figurative and also musically
this symbolic area is personally anonymous
but there are other terms that are completely synonymous
like the title "The Basement" and of course "Underground"
which means no gimmicks you display your own sound
of rhythmatic, straight forward, hard lyricism
and don't be involved with much commercialism
be creative, original and charismatic
and don't be senselessly idiosyncratic
always bring the ruckus everytime you rhyme
never switch up your style just change within time
don't emulate or duplicate nobody else
no matter what people say just always be yourself
resurrecting hip hop; you are not alone
but it starts here in the subterranean zone
