One Step Ahead lyrics

Artist – Aretha Franklin

Lyrics – One Step Ahead

I’m only one step ahead of heartbreak
one step ahead of misery
one step is all I have to take
backwards, to be the same old fool for you
I used to be
I’m only one step ahead of your arms
one kiss away from your sweet lips
I know I can’t afford to stop for one moment
Cos I’m just out of reach of your fingertips
Your warm breath on my shoulder
Keeps reminding me
That it’s too soon to forget you
It’s too late to be free, can’t you see?
I’m only one step ahead of your love
I try and yet I can’t take two
Seems like I’ll have to take that one step backwards
Cos one step ahead is a step too far away from you.
Cos one step ahead is a step too far away from you.
Just one step ahead is a step too far away from you.

  1. There is a rap song that sampled this. Not that new one by that girl, the OG one. From the late 90’s or early 2000’s. I thought it was Nas, but I cant find it. Can any rap fan enlighten me please. Much appreciated 🤙🏽

EDIT: Found it! 😀 Ms Fat Booty by Mos Def

  2. Moonlight brought me here. It has been decades since a film has bowled me over as it did. A masterpiece! Every element of that movie has meaning. So brilliantly/thoughtfully constructed that I have watched it almost a dozen times since I finally viewed it the first time just last month. Each viewing brought out a new detail or revelation.

  3. A lot of people say that Aretha didn't hit her stride until Jerry Wexler took her from Columbia and started recording her with the cats from Muscle Shoals. Well this is a perfect example of how they were off the mark.Maybe Columbia weren't sure what direction to point her in, but the beauty of her singing is right there from the start.

  4. The comments to this song took me to Moonlight. Just saw it last week. I'm still trying to process what I saw. The movie on all levels is a masterpiece. The performances are incredible.

  5. I got here 'cause of Mos' sample and see that many got here because of a film! Wow! This is why movie soundtracks rock man! They're put together by peeps that know their shit. Now if you excuse me, I have to check that Moonlight movie.

  6. She is one of the few people I remember where I was when I heard she had died. What a gorgeous lady!!! And a voice to match!!! I saw her months before she died in the Golden Nugget Casino in Lake Charles LA , I was beside myself . Aretha , you are missed!

  7. I literally just watched Moonlight. Never got a chance to see it in the theaters. So this song was featured n I immediately remembered 'Ms Fat Booty' n I had to search for it. Never knew it was Ms Franklin. Thx for uploading. Bless up🙏
