Bangkok’s Slum Rappers Making Waves | 19Tyger x Elevenfinger | VICE Raps

Bangkok’s Klong Toey slum has produced some fine rappers in the last couple of years, namely 19Tyger and ElevenFinger. Repping their hood, both rappers released songs about their lives and homes, becoming local sensations—aptly titled “Klong Toey.” In August 2019, VICE met these rappers to see what they’re up to since their first taste of fame, and to go behind the scenes of 19Tyger’s new music video for “Saeng Slum (Slum Light).” We got a look at the neighbourhood, the making of the video, and had a conversation with their producer DJ Henri about what makes these rappers such an exciting new voice in Bangkok.

  2. i love these grassroots story and how he's literally recording in the producers living room and singing into a plastic bin covering the microphone. This is awesome, I hope he makes it one day ! very humble kid

  3. I love this. I’m a Thai adoptee from an area not really the “slums” but definitely not the richest area in Eastern Thailand. I’m blessed to have grown up in a well off family in the states. Rapping was always more than just music to me, I use it to express feelings of self identity as a Thai adoptee growing up American. The past few years I’ve really gotten to see Thai Hip Hop explode to more than what commercialism wants it to be. I don’t understand Thai, but I understand the feeling through music. I can’t thank VICE Asia enough for doing this. It means so much to someone who struggles with identity

  4. "they are poor but they are not bad guys" i wish this mentality was the same here in Philippines except these days they are just accused of being drug users and criminals just because of the way they look and where they live, especially our government they are very judgmental, instead of looking for reason why its happening they wanna blame others instead of there mistakes

  5. If thai people with chinese decent nah they aint real..
The real thai's are brown or darker skin(Buakaw Banchamek) ,they welcome or thank u with both hand(sawadikap or namaste)
