Horse Power: Hip-Hop’s Impact on Polo Ralph Lauren

Polo Ralph Lauren wasn’t originally meant for the hip-hop community until the Lo-Lifes, a crew of Brooklyn teenagers, adopted the label and made it their own in the late ‘80s. It exploded in the streets and by the ‘90s, Polo was an inescapable part of hip-hop culture, from music videos to magazine covers. Despite the sometimes rocky relationship between the vastly different worlds, Polo has become an integral component of the hip-hop community for the last three decades. An all-star line up including A$AP Ferg, 2 Chainz, Fabolous, Tyson Beckford, Daymond John, Raekwon, Dapper Dan, Fonzworth Bentley, Michaela Angela Davis and more share their first-hand insights on the legendary brand’s connection to the culture in Complex’s documentary, “Horse Power.”

  1. Polo thanks all black folks that have bought and STOLE their items since the 1980's HOWEVER their clothes were ONLY meant for the white elite always keep that in mind.

  2. Could it be that Ralph's a little upset about his art (clothing pieces) being stolen and resold without his consent? He seems to have the same attitude about hip hop that alot of artists who were sampled by djs do. They respect the game, but they not homies. (shrugs) It is what it is.

  3. It's just not the same it's corny now once people rich kids with money start getting involved they can just buy up anything and then really have to pay any dues for it or struggle to get it so it ain't the same

  4. Instead of checking underwear labels, y'all should check the tags for the country the garment was made in. If it's not Usa, Italy, or England you're straight up wearing some cheap bullshit. Facts !

  5. I don’t know how it is now but back in the day unless you were Gangsta with it or could run fast everybody couldn’t roam around freely with Polo pieces on. Get robbed or your melon split quick quick.
