“To Be Young, Gifted & Black” performed by @Nina Simone (includes interview)
Recording session: Live at @MorehouseCollege in Atlanta, June 1969
Many people in the theater were hard core African students and to see one of their champions like Miss Simone give such a breathtaking inspiring message made the theater explode I would have loved to have been there to feel that energy
There had never been, nor will there be, any talent as mercurial as Nina Simone. I first saw her perform atThe Barbican Theatre in London in the early 1980s. I went because a review said that seeing her perform live was as revolutionary and original as seeing The Sex Pistols in 1975, when they first started. Never having seen The Pistols, I thought I'd go, and I was totally blown away by everything about her. She was rude to the audience–it was as though she didn't care if they were there or not–and spent as much time talking as she did playing and singing. But I'd never seen or heard anyone like her, and she was phenomenal. After that, I saw her in jazz clubs in New York and Los Angeles, and at the Royal Festival Hall in London a few years before she died.
Young, gifted and black in 2022!❤
