“Holes In The Building” sees London Posse man and all-round Godfather of British hip hop Rodney P linking up with Bristol’s DJ Die, one of UK dance music’s most influential figures whose exploits include co-founding Reprazent with Roni Size. Here, the pair combine their talents to forge an attention-grabbing slice of conscious ska- and hip hop-infused pop music. With early support from MistaJam, Rodigan, Ace and Charlie Sloth on 1Xtra, Annie Nightingale (BBC R1), Edward Adoo (BBC 3CR), BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq and Don Letts (to name a few), this punchy and magnetic track is spreading far and wide.
Connecting with their common ska and two-tone roots, Rodney P & DJ Die simultaneously turn back the clock while updating the script – although, as they concede, when it comes to the social message of the song and prospects of the kids it calls out to, the script sadly hasn’t changed much since the heyday of The Specials, The Selecter, Bad Manners and all the others they used to listen to as young wannabe rude-boys.
“The inner city is still falling apart, the kids are still bored with not much to do other than party all night with the occasional riot to spice things up”, says DJ Die; “The only other alternatives are to either get a regular job and work nine-to-five for shit money, sell drugs or get creative. The latter of these three things is what we’re suggesting would best thing to do, and of course bus a one foot skank – standard.”
