Collin (Daveed Diggs) must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), work as movers, and when Collin witnesses a police shooting, the two men’s friendship is tested as they grapple with identity and their changed realities in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood they grew up in.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style, and humor, and infused with the spirit of rap, hip hop, and spoken word, Blindspotting, boldly directed by Carlos López Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.

A Summit Entertainment presentation, in association with Codeblack Films and Snoot Entertainment.

  1. The first thing you do is keep trying to remember the names
It's Freddie Alton Oscar Walter Eric and Stephon Philando Sam Tamir Terrence Michael Sondra Sean
Down Miles' knuckles paints his fear of a black son
A Collin with a strike all he can think to do is run
This is Oakland under the gun Where we legalize the dope after they locked up all the guys who did the runs
Now there's new ones with the funds who bought broken homes in hopes that they were patchin up the slums
Not noticing they're standin on the backs of local sons and daughters
Buildin a high rise in the high tide of a slaughter
Shut down the deli flip the plot now its a Starbucks on the corner (yeah but I- I like coffee) I like coffee too but…
But it's not for me – us.
The new York Times called Oakland the new top 5 places to live here
It's cause we made water out the desert now they wanna build on the mud here
Must be somethin in the water
    And everything we own wet
They keep tellin me it's somethin in the water and I see that they are gearing up to go get a piece
Lakeshore and the bottoms uptown Temescal and the problem is half of these neighborhoods didn't exist before we felt a drip and got thirsty
(I do like coffee – yeah I like coffee too, but)
    It's somethin in the water
Look at the desert we made where money sucks everything dry where culture is liquid and currently in short supply
Where what we once called a community suddenly gets monetized and once again soil is tilled on our backs just when we thought we were out
Where picking cotton become cotton mouth
Look at the desert we called it a drought
Now they just all want us out
A city trying to erase mistakes it makes me wanna shout
It's Freddie Alton Oscar Walter Eric and Stefon Philando Sam Tamir and Terrence Michael Sondra Sean
Each day I say the names but it gets harder to hold on
And cause the city's disappearing, can't forget what's dead and gone
While we demonize the poor we relocate and ignore, we revoke and demote til we live in remote and when they revolt cops hit reload
Until the bodies hit the floor
No pity for the fallen kid on CNN who saw his end because he had a gun and we don't wonder why he needed it
Judge the poor resorting to stealing, selling and slanging not knowing you could've lived off those communities' incomes medium
How perfect does a black boy have to be before we mourn him?
How quickly must a neighborhood vanish for us to notice?
We're standing on roots and coffins and don't know the names of the dead
Quit aiming at my head, I'm trying to focus!
It is Freddie Alton Oscar Walter Eric and Stephon Philando Sam Tamir and Terrence Michael Sondra… um… It's Michael Sondra… It's Michael sondra… fuck it, who are we forgetting?
    What was his name?
All I remember is how he was slain.
    Where it was done
There's a whole foods there now but I don't recognize anyone
There's a whole new there there now they told me my here here better run
Town want us on the run
    Cops yelling stop
Both want us disappeared, unsure of which the bigger gun
And now when I watch I spot the slight scheme of the high rises on my block
    Ain't no bygones getting bygone
I am eyes wide to a blindspot
It's high time that a driveby by a black suit will get prosecuted like a high crime
Fuck a line of duty call it execution right on primetime
And what is the peace code when your home streets get repoed for the highest bidders that's the fire embers of an auction block causin higher tempers for its dire members
So here is a story about divided brothers trying to find each other through their violent tempers called it Blindspotting
It's just been us strumming that sad song we laugh along to as survival fluid
Now we wanna pass it along to folks like yall to help us amplify the movement
    This is Blindspotting
Till we movin more in unison pen a blueprint till its fruition and fruitvale type abuses are a rear view like the noose is
    This is Blindspotting
Cause it ain't like we lack the proper toolkits and the art is how we hold the mirror up
Show this fiction to reveal the truth until it's clear enough
    This is Blindspotting
Help us roll the picture and remember
Freddie Alton Oscar Walter Eric and Stephon Philando Sam tamir and Terrence Michael Sondra Sean
Cause a story never told becomes a story dead and gone
Together we can make a space where all these names live on
    This is Blindspotting

(Formatting is weird, sorry) I was waiting for someone to transcribe this, and I couldn't find anybody who did, so I did it myself.

Edit: if I spelled anything wrong PLEASE feel free to correct me!!!

  2. how talented, how unique and how pure they are!
    it's inspiring… i don't even know what to say
but i've just decided that i should make sure to be here congratulating and praising these two for the work they've put on, from the movie to this to the EP
it's just that.. we need to value art and artists such as these guys, they are rare and i hope they always be there to care and dare to say what's fair.
    much love from Egypt

  3. I would do anything for these two to get oscar nods for either acting or writing for Blindspotting. I've seen a total of 58 movies from 2018 and Blindspotting is by far my favorite. Possibly one of my favorite movies of all time. People like these two remind me what it means to be an artist and how impactful 2 voices can be. Two of my idols.

  4. Here's me, months later, listening to this again, EXTRAORDINARILY happy that Daveed's "something in the water" verse here made its way onto the Blindspotting EP Part 1. "Something in the Water" is my favorite track off the EP. It's so heavy. This is beautiful and heart-wrenching.

  5. Where is the black on black crime ….rhyme.
There is none, don’t look there
    cuz there’s no whites there…
    Self Destruction ,chuck D
And his lyrics today still make him the ENEMY
Fear of a Black planet , prophetic?
Or irony that the black planet called Chicago
can’t live in peace. Do you remember who killed “yummy” ???
it was a black man…. that killed the kid.
Say their names or don’t you like the other
3 fingers pointing right back at you.
    👉🏿👈🏿👉👈👉🏻👈🏾👉🏾👈🏿

  6. For real tho is it bad that I listened to this more than once and I cry harder each time
"Freddy, Alton, Oscar, Walter, Eric and Stephon, Velando, Sam, Temear, Terrance, Michal, Sandra, Sean." I don't even know them but now I'm sad their gone this is true it seems like a black kid does have to be perfect to be remembered, and now I feel bad because I just rhymed with this that was not intentional but still tho. Am I the only who feel bad in the community we live in today.

  7. I've been a fan of their writing, especially Rafael's for years on end. I'm glad to see it's poignancy and ingenuity haven't been lost for even a second. Incredibly excited for this movie.

  8. This had me drowning in fucking tears, that was so inspiring omg, i always feel like im a good artist but this just made me feel like im shit but made me proud to be in the hood almost that was dope asl

  9. My babies! Please tell them. "How prefect does a Black boy have to be before we mourn him?" "A story never told becomes a story dead and gone." Wow.

  10. WATCH THE TRAILER! It took a rewind a few times but I got it all. Powerful but why sooo fast? I almost missed this & the trailer with the noise of political roasts, sham trade hand shakes & fluff pieces of porn stars distractions. Glad I clicked the link.

  11. "We dont wonder why he needed it .." That line right there was the one that really got to me. This was an amazing piece and the way you guys performed it was nothing short of amazing. STunning work. Well done
